Periodontitis is an inflammation of the periodontium, i.e., the tissues that support the tooth in the bone. It is an extremely common disease, affecting over 50% of adults in one form or another.
Unfortunately, periodontitis is often ignored or treated superficially, even though it is one of the main causes of tooth loss.
Many patients do not realize that the disease has set in and are unaware of the long-term consequences of not treating it.
What causes periodontitis?
Periodontitis generally occurs due to an imbalance between the oral bacterial flora and the immune system’s response, with genetics playing a key role.
Over time, bacteria penetrate under the gums and end up affecting the ligaments that support the tooth and alveolar bone. The tissues deteriorate progressively, and the tooth loses its stability.
Without treatment, the teeth begin to move and eventually fall out.
Contributing factors:
- Genetic predisposition
- Smoking
- Chronic stress or intense emotional episodes
- Certain medications used in chronic treatments
- Oral contraceptives or hormonal changes (e.g., pregnancy)
- Malocclusion (incorrect bite)
- Medical conditions such as osteoporosis, diabetes, or cardiovascular disease
What are the stages of periodontal disease?
Gingivitis – superficial inflammation of the gums, reversible with proper treatment;
Superficial periodontitis – when the inflammation begins to affect the supporting structures of the tooth;
Deep (advanced) periodontitis – with bone loss, tooth mobility, and increased risk of extraction.

Can periodontal disease be treated?
Periodontal disease cannot be completely cured, but it can be kept under control.
The goal of treatment is to stop the disease from progressing, prevent complications, and preserve teeth in the long term. That is why it is essential to intervene early, under the guidance of a periodontist.

At Liren, periodontal treatments are performed with magnification (magnifying glasses or microscope) and isolation with a dam – a special foil that ensures a dry field and excellent visibility for the doctor.
This approach increases the precision, safety, and efficiency of interventions, offering patients the best chance of keeping their natural teeth for as long as possible.
