When it comes to temporary dentition, teeth groups erupt approximately every 6 months, until the child reaches the age of 2 and a half years. Oral hygiene in children starts as early as the infant stage – by wiping the new-born’s mouth with swabs soaked in chamomile tea, followed by delicate gum massage with the finger.
Tooth brushing begins around 1 and a half years old.
It is recommended that the child watch one of the parents brush their teeth, because children have the tendency to imitate and will want to participate in this “game”, brushing their own teeth. It is indicated to use a small brush, special for children and a toothpaste with a pleasant flavour. At first, the parent will help the child hold the brush and guide the child’s motions. The brushing motions must be vertical, from the gum towards the tooth (horizontal motions are inefficient when it comes to cleaning food residues stuck in between the teeth).
The electric toothbrush is very helpful: it executes oscillating motions, requiring light 5 to 10-second pressure on each group of teeth.
